More than just backer board…

One of the terrific aspects of Wedi Shower Systems backer board is the versatility that it offers contractors and remodelers. How do you add a shower bench or seat to an existing shower? Well, up to now it would involve labor intensive wood supports anchored to the tile by making HOLES in it, obviously not a good idea. Then, a product is used to cover the wood support structure and then you tile and hope for the best. Not anymore! Now you can add a bench in less then a day, not put holes in your shower base or walls and have an reasonably priced addition to your shower that adds value and comfort.

Wedi 2 inch thick board is the answer. It can be cut without generating sawdust or cement dust and is mildew and rot proof as well as waterproof. There is not any wood structure to attract water and the 2 inch board is strong enough for any shower bench or seat. This review was done to test the performance of 3 different cement boards for ceramic tile installation: The Wedi Backer board, Hardibacker® and Wonderboard®. These boards are used as a floor underlayment when installing ceramic tiles, glass block showers, shower floor tiles, or as a sub floor for bathrooms.

The test picture included in this blog used polyurethane sealant for all 3 products and was allowed to sit undisturbed for 24hrs. Think about this, most showers are used at least once per day and some twice a day or more. If your shower is used for 15 minutes a day by the 96th shower you will have used it for 24 hours total. Once the backerboard behind your tile gets wet it will stay wet and mold and mildew can begin. Use Wedi shower components and stop worrying.

There are many types of backerboards for shower walls which offer varying degrees of moisture protection. Some will absorb and pass water extensively. Many are treated on one face or both with a water resistant coating, others are mixed with absorption slowing agents which help slow the saturation of water process. There are no waterproof cement or fiber core boards on the market that Masonry & Glass Systems is aware of. Most are water resistant but all will wick and retain water at the core. Here is your Wedi Shower Systems Tech Tip: WEDI 2 inch wall board from Masonry & Glass Systems is an amazing material.  Bathroom remodeling contractors or tile contractors can easily add a shower seat to an existing shower without disturbing the existing  tile.  Also because the existing shower is left intact the addition of the seat can be accomplished in a very cost effective way.  There are many other ways to utilize the strength of this 2 inch thick board to build anything you would like to cover with tile.

Three years ago Wedi was the first manufacturer to introduce channel or linear drains that were fully integrated into a tile ready shower pan with the Wedi Riolito. Now comes the new Wedi Fundo Riofino tileable shower pan. Water drains away through a narrow gap between the cover plate and the tile.

The new Riofino pan features a linear center drain that is in the middle of the Wedi base.  This gives a new, unique look to a shower while maintaining a center drain but allows the use of larger tiles.  The cover comes in a variety of finishes and can be even tiled over to make the drain almost invisible.
