Questions about window energy performance?

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) rates the energy performance of most windows, doors and skylights. If you have questions about window energy performance, you can use these ratings similar to the sticker rating miles per gallon on a car or truck to rate the particular efficiency of a window you are considering buying.

You can:

  1. Compare different widow manufacturers on a apples to apples basis
  2. Confirm that the performance you are being told by the contractor is accurate
  3. Gather information that can assist you on making a decision on a product that will be in your home for many decades

The NFRC is an independent entity and owes no allegiance to any manufacturer. That is why the federal government encourages homeowners to only consider windows rated by the NFRC.

One way to confirm the windows you have purchased have the same rating as what you contracted for is to look for the NFRC label. The label which is usually secured in a corner of the glass of the window you purchased. You can also go to www.windowratings.org where you can:

  1. Search the database to compare windows you are considering
  2. Answers to a lot of questions on NFRC
  3. Submit questions to independent experts at NFRC

The following is an example of an NFRC label and what the ratings mean and how to read the label. Click on the image below to view full document:
